"The worst speech you'll ever give, will be far better than the one you never give." - Fred Miller

Education Equity and Arts in LA, Sandy Escobedo | Anthony Masters Photography

In our globally connected world, we need to become confident public speakers now more than ever.

We use stories to sell our products. We give presentations to establish ourselves as experts in our industries.

Sometimes the speeches we give are not work related at all. We are asked by our loved ones to speak during life’s defining moments, such as at weddings and funerals.

Many of us rob ourselves of the opportunity to be great public speakers because of one factor: FEAR.

We fear making mistakes. We fear boring our audiences or appearing unknowledgeable of the topic we are presenting.

I know the feeling because I used to feel that way too.

When I first started speaking in public, I would apologize to the audience for feeling nervous. Overtime, I started making modest improvements. It was in 2005 while I was in graduate school that I worked with a public speaking coach from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Her feedback made me realize that my own fear was getting in the way of me becoming a powerful public speaker.

I desperately wanted to make a good first impression so I used note cards throughout the entire course of a speech I delivered in front of my peers.

The coach videotaped me and critiqued my speech. She said something to me that I will never forget.

She said to me, “Sandy- you are getting in your own way. Your words alone are quite powerful. You don’t need the cue cards.”

After taking here advice and working tirelessly to improve my public speaking skills, I can now speak in front of hundreds of people- from youth to adults.

Here’s a testimonial from a public speaking engagement in 2015:

"Sandy came to speak at my annual 'College Day' event. Within three words she had 600 Middle schools students and all of the adults in attendance riveted. Her passion was evident as she connected easily to her audience, weaving personal experiences with an inspirational message. Afterwards she did the same in smaller group settings. We had many requests for her to return the following year!"
